Precious Plastic Syros

The Precious Plastic Syros Lab, part of the global Precious Plastic movement, is a local response to the pressing issue of plastic waste in island environments.
Founded in 2019 with support from the Cyclades Preservation Fund, our lab operates as a small-scale recycling workshop that collects, sorts, and processes various types of plastic waste, transforming them into usable, durable products. Our lab focuses on collecting, sorting, and processing plastic waste to create reusable products while educating the public about the importance of a circular economy. By leveraging open-source technology and involving the local community, we aim to demonstrate how small-scale recycling can make a big difference.
The Lab

The lab processes a variety of plastic streams, primarily focusing on HDPE and PP, both of which are common in everyday products. We collect and sort plastics by type and color, ensuring that our recycled products meet high standards of quality and durability.

At the core of the Precious Plastic Lab are four machines – Shredder, Extrusion, Injection και Compression – designed by the global Precious Plastic community, which allow us to turn waste into functional, high-quality products. At the same time, we use molds designed exclusively by the Precious Plastic Syros team, enhancing the uniqueness and sustainability of our creations.

EDUCATIONAL
PROGRAMS
A key component of Precious Plastic Syros is our educational approach. We believe that active participation is crucial to achieving meaningful and lasting change. Our workshops provide experiential learning opportunities where participants—from local schoolchildren and students to international volunteers—can actively engage in the recycling process. By learning about circular plastic management, they gain a better understanding of environmental challenges and solutions to address them.
